Benefits of Rototilling Your Garden
1. Loosens Hard, Compacted Soil
Packed soil makes it tough for roots to grow. Tilling breaks it up, allowing plants to stretch out and thrive.
2. Improves Water Absorption
Tilled soil drains better and holds moisture more evenly—no more puddles or dry spots.
3. Boosts Root Growth
Loose, aerated soil gives roots room to breathe and spread, which means stronger, healthier plants.
4. Mixes in Organic Matter & Nutrients
Tilling helps blend compost, fertilizer, or mulch deep into the soil—right where your plants need it most.
5. Saves You Hours of Labor
No more digging by hand. Tilling does in minutes what could take you days with a shovel.
When to have your garden tilled
1. Spring is generally the best time to till
Specifically when the soil is dry enough to work but not too wet.
2. Wait till it warms up
This could be anywhere from March to May or early June, depending on your location and the current year’s weather.
3. Test the soil dryness
Insert a trowel into the soil.
4. Fall is a good time to prepare for next year
Tilling in the fall allows exposed weeds, roots, and grass to die over the winter.
